Great News – the cabin now has its own Electricity and Water connections.
Painting the Cabin
It’s True What They Say – Many Hands Make Light Work!
What a Wonderful Transformation today.

A Fabulous turnout this morning, with a Dozen Volunteers working on the Cabin. Three hours of work got the priming finished and the first coat of colour. Work continuing this afternoon if anyone wants to come along and contribute to building your Community Shop. Thanks to everyone who showed up!
Great job this afternoon by all the Volunteers who turned out to help with the Community Shop, it now has two coats of primer and two coats of topcoat – it is looking good.
Thank you all for your time and efforts. Great to see everyone enjoying working together and having some fun and laughs along the way.
Next week, work will be done on the utility connections, giving the Cabin it’s own water and power.
The Cabin Has Arrived
So it has arrived! The cabin container is now on site.Thank you to everyone who came along to watch. A really BIG thank you to the Parish Hall for agreeing to the ground works and delivery taking place during Lockdown! In a bizarre twist, this has worked out really well for our plans!

Ground Work Has Started
Great News: Work started today on digging the trench for the sewerage pipe and the electricity cable. Huge thanks go to Brian Johns of Dairy Mill for not only providing the mechanical digger but also his time and effort in operating it.

Community Shop Update – Slowly Coming Out of Lockdown
Our first wishes are of course for everyone’s health and wellbeing, and that our priorities right now are on reducing and preventing the spread of Covid-19 and also on supporting and helping neighbours and friends across our community.
Whilst, inevitably, the Community Shop is pausing temporarily with anything involving face to face activities, work is continuing with other plans, including finalising the Lease with the Parish Hall Committee and working on the detailed building plans as required by local Building Control.
Given the current situation with the slow release from Lockdown, we are now in a position to progress with starting the groundworks in preparation for the arrival of the Portacabin for the Shop Building. At the time of writing, the details are that sometime during late May work will commence in the Parish Hall Car park on the utility connections and the concrete base for the building. This is outdoor work and will involve only one or two people at a time, and of course the social distancing rules will be followed at all times! With the current good weather and the opportunity to get on with the work whilst the Hall is not in regular use, the hope is that we will be in a position to organise the delivery of the Portacabin to the site sometime in June. This will be an important milestone in the creation of our Community Shop – please look out for further updates in the next Parish News and also on Facebook.
We have also been continuing to make further applications for funding from local and national grant awarding bodies. Early in the new year, we submitted a substantial application to a local fund through the Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF) and were expecting to hear from this in mid March. There was an inevitable delay as the CCF directed their energies towards emergency local fundraising in response to the current Coronavirus situation. We did eventually hear the good news that the Community Shop has been successful and awarded £500. Although this is less than the amount we had applied for, we are grateful to have received this award in these current circumstances. We have some other applications, albeit for similar modest amounts of funds, and are keeping everything crossed that these will also be successful. This brings our total fundraising to a total figure in the region of £29,000, an amazing amount raised to support the development of our Community Shop!
Our work on fundraising continues. Whilst there may be some delays as Fundholders prioritise their activities to those directly connected with the current crisis; we are positive that over time we will be able to find the further funding needed. We will keep you updated on progress.
Finally, as the plans for the Community Shop now start to move into the ‘building phase’, we are also beginning to think ahead to organising the Volunteers to work in the Shop. Last year, over 60 people expressed an interest in working as Volunteer in the Community Shop and we are now in the process of contacting everyone who put their name forward. If you want to contact someone from the Steering Group to talk about volunteering to work in the Shop or if anything else has changed for you then please do contact Sue Morrish, Company Secretary for the St Dominick Community Shop CBS.
Thank you as always for your continuing support, and please keep safe and well during these challenging times.
A message to our Community
Our first wishes are, of course, for everyone’s health and wellbeing, and all our priorities right now are on those necessary actions to reduce and prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to support and help those who most need it.
And also, it is important to take the time to appreciate and value the essential and wonderful work of the NHS and other Key Workers and Frontline staff in our Communities to keep us all going.
As a signal of some positivity and optimism, we also want to take the opportunity to let our local Community know that the Steering Group are continuing to work and make progress, where we practically can, on the creation of our Community Shop. At times like this, it brings home even more clearly, the importance of being able to access and use the services of a Shop and that this is right at the heart of how we live together and support one another in our Community.
Whilst we have (quite understandably) temporarily suspended our monthly Steering Group meetings, there are still actions and work underway and we are finding other ways of connecting remotely and virtually to keep the momentum progressing.
Our key areas of activity at present include:
• Finalising the details for the Lease with the Parish Hall Committee
• Planning and preparing for the Utilities connections and Building works
• Applications for further Funding
• Planning the Internal Layout plans for the Shop
• Preparing for welcoming the Shop Volunteers
We will continue to keep you updated on progress, and may even be asking some of you for inputs and help (on a remote basis of course) to assist us over the coming weeks.
THANK YOU – Promises Auction and Parish Hall Meeting
It has been a little while since we have shared any update, and this has been because we have been busy with lots of things relating to progressing with the Shop.
First of all, a big THANK YOU to everyone who turned out for the Parish Hall Meeting on 26 February. The vote on the evening gave a clear message about the level of support from the Parish Residents to give consent to the Community Shop building on the Parish Hall site. This is a requirement for the lease negotiations and we are continuing to progress with these, along with the plans for the build of the Shop. We will continue to keep everyone updated on this.
And our second big THANK YOU is to the Who’d Have Thought It and everyone involved in the Promises Auction on 29 February. As you are probably aware, over £2000 was raised and half of this money is being given to the Community Shop , with the other half going to the School. This is wonderful news and will be a considerable contribution to our fundraising.
Finally, a reminder for Shareholders – please return your GDPR forms, these will mean that we can keep in contact with you about Shareholder matters relating to the development of the Community Shop.
The Lease with the Parish Hall
As you may have heard by now, when the Parish Hall started to look at the Lease on their side, they discovered that the original 1953 Conveyance for the Parish Hall site did not include a Community Shop in the list of activities for which the land could be used. This means that the Parish Hall now has to formally agree with the Parishioners that a Community Shop can be erected on the land.
The 1953 Conveyance sets out a process by which this can take place through a public meeting and vote and a consultation process, followed by seeking formal approval from the Charities Commission. You may have seen some of the notices beginning to appear around the Parish regarding the Parish Hall meeting for this purpose, which is
taking place at 7pm on Wednesday 26th February.
As frustrating as it is for there to be further delays in being able to make progress with the Shop, we do respect that everything needs to be done properly, not least when it comes to setting up the legal basis for the Shop and its location, and we are keen to work with the Parish Hall to support this process.
Ultimately, it is up to the Parish Residents to decide whether they wish to agree to the use of the Parish Hall land for the Community Shop, and this needs to be formally established before progressing any further. There are now more than 130 Members of the Community Shop CBS and, with the large sum of money raised so far, this already shows significant local support for the Shop. With this in mind, it is really important that as many Members as possible attend the Parish Hall meeting and ensure that this positive support is demonstrated.
7pm on Wednesday 26th February, St Dominick Parish Hall.
Planning Application Approved
The Steering Group have received the formal notification from Cornwall Council granting planning permission for the Community Shop. This is a significant milestone towards the actual creation of the Shop and the Steering Group are all delighted. Thank You to everyone who has helped with, supported and contributed to this.
The next step is to finalise the Lease with the Parish Hall. Discussions on this are currently underway and we will keep everyone updated on progress and timescales. The Steering Group are all looking forward to being able to arrange the delivery of the Portacabin and progressing with the next stages of actually starting to work on building the new Community Shop.

The deadline for the initial Share Offer has now closed. All the purchases and payments have been checked and checked again and we are delighted to be able to tell you that the offer has raised an incredible £18,000 and that the Community Shop now has 130 Shareholders.
