Project Updates

Volunteer Recruitment

We are actively seeking to recruit more Volunteers to work in the Shop. There are many ways in which you may be able to assist so do take the opportunity to contact us to discuss the skills and experience you may have to offer.

New Projects 2024-25

1. Levelling Up Fund – Future Proofing St Dominick Community Shop

Solar panels & cladding – a successful bid was made to the Cornwall County Council Levelling Up fund for monies to install solar panels to reduce energy costs and to clad the original Shop cabin. The work to install those items started in April 2024 and was completed in the early summer months so we have already benefitted from these premises improvements. It is estimated that the solar panels will save about a third of our energy costs.

Community Safety – we have installed external lighting to the Shop as a safety measure for both volunteers who work the early & late shifts and customers who still rely on the shop in the darker winter months.

As part of our commitment in return for receiving the funding, we are planning to further improve the service the Shop provides. There will be two ways that we intend to do that:

Home delivery service – this service was rolled out in October 2024. It’s main aim is to benefit those older members of the community and those that are housebound living in the local area by providing a twice weekly service to deliver groceries to their homes.

Work experience – work is being done to scope and introduce work experience schemes for both school-aged children and those who have left school and are seeking work experience to build their CV.

This project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Cornwall Council has been chosen by Government as a Lead Authority for the fund and is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

2. Cornwall County Council Community Chest

Marketing initiatives – a successful bid was made the Cornwall County Council Community Chest fund for monies to further market the Shop. These include an update and reprint of the Shop leaflet which is distributed to holiday accommodation and visitor attractions in the local area and the purchase of items to draw attention to the Shop’s location and the wide range of products it sells.
